My undergraduate research at McGill University focused on searching for whale vocalizations in seismic waveforms, to better understand whale movement and habitat usage. I have analyzed datasets of both land and ocean bottom seismometers, in Eastern Canada (Lower St. Lawrence Seaway) and along the Northeast Pacific Ocean coast (Offshore Washington and Cape Mendocino, California). Seismic Soundscapes is a compilation of audio visualizations of various low frequency (pitch) noises produced by whales, ships and earthquakes that were identified throughout this project. These sounds are below the human hearing range, so the signals were sped up 1000 times to become audible.
Below is an example of a magnitude 3.63 earthquake recorded off Cape Mendocino that has been sonified.
